How do you cope with temptation?
Me? Not so good. I have a definite weak spot.
In this week's Thrifty Thursday post, I mentioned that I am doing a make over on The Boy's room. This has been the S..L..O..O..O..O..O..W..E..S..T make over I have ever done. I just dread the actual work involved in cleaning out his room. UGH!
I have picked up things along the way to add to his room - containers to place on his shelves for small toys, a couple of pictures, a thingy (hard to describe but it was cheap). All of that stuff is in a pile waiting to be added to his room.
I was shopping for milk and toilet paper in __________ (fill in the blank, you know me well enough to know where I was). I meandered through the bedding department, not looking for a new bedspread for The Boy mind you, just strolling (THAT is a total lie). And then of course I happened to spot it... the PERFECT 'bed in a bag' set.
Oh the JOY of a good bed in a bag! Comforter, pillow sham, bed skirt, and sheet set... ALL IN ONE BAG! And so inexpensive!
*TV announcer voice* You get all of this for one low payment of $39.98! And there's more! We're going to throw in a hefty helping of guilt for your impulse buy! You get the striped comforter and sham, blue bed skirt, matching sheets and pillow case plus the opportunity to beat yourself up emotionally for spending money, ALL for the low cost of $39.98!
So, let me take a minute to justify my impulse buy (practice for when I have to face Bryan)...
1. It was the perfect colors.
2. I haven't bought The Boy new bedding in.... 3 maybe 4 years.
3. It was only (yes?) 40 bucks.
4. It was the perfect colors.
5. The last comforter set that I bought him a few years ago has a big old stain on it and really has to go.
6. The other comforter that I had planned to use (my mom gave it to him a couple of years ago) had no matching sham, bed skirt, or sheets.
7. I was going to have to buy a throw pillow or something anyway to tie that comforter into the room.
8. It was the perfect colors.
9. I wanted it reeeeeally bad for my son, not for myself (mm hm).
What do you think? Even though I was tempted by the sack (and the covers within) and I yielded to that temptation, I'm justified. Right?
Don't judge me.

I hate to shop. Seriously. But when I do go, I always impulse buy something! So you won't get any judging from me! :-D
how could i judge? i mean seriously? did i or did i not ask how to exercise a little self control? also - i totally bought a bed in a bag three weeks ago. perfect colors and all that. ;)
My friend, it makes sense to me. I don't judge you - I stand with you. I know you would have my back, right?
LOL, if we had extra cash, I probably would have splurged too!
We could so be sisters...
tonight I went into Wally World and faced the idiots on Friday night....went to spend maybe 40 bucks....guess how much i really spent....87!!!!
Talk about impulse!
You are justified!
No need to convince me - you had me at "only $39.98"!
No guilt from this girl. When you redo a room you must redo it all!
That was a steal of a deal :]
No pictures??
I personally think you got a GREAT deal and there's nothing to be guilty about!!!
shopping I avoid it like the plague!
I agree that the perfect colors are hard to ignore! Why do us women come with a built in guiltometer? I can't wait to see the finished room, and I am sure the boy is excited for the way cool theme! Plus you saved all that money on the other items right?
As Justin Timberlake would say...Justified!
It will complete the room. The bed is usually the main focal point in a bedroom.
...sounds good, right? LOL!
BARB - I really struggle with impulse buys. I avoid shopping altogether because of it.
HEATHER - What is cool about bed in a bag sets is that they are always priced right. I like change and I can if I haven't put a lot of money into it.
NADINE! Yes, I would have your back :)
MUTHERING - We are trying to be more "financially conservative" right now. I really do feel a sense of guilt but I think the price was SO reasonable!
JESS - Ha! You knew what store I was talking about, didn't you? The other day I was in the parking lot and a lady started talking to me about overspending at Walmart. I think maybe we all do it sometimes.
JEANETTE - It really was a good price, wasn't it? Still in all, it wasn't a necessity. ACK! Guilty.
LIZZY - pictures to follow soon! I worked in his room a little tonight but I have a long way to go. He had kindergarten level books in his room and he is in 2nd grade. It's time to let some stuff go!
MIKE - Smart man!
HANSONPATCH - I dunno but that guiltometer is a booger bear. The Boy LIKES changes but his room was very cute and masucline before. I hope I get this right and make him happy.
LITTLE TOES - that was GOOD. Yes! The bed is the focal point of the bedroom and it needs to be just right :)
Thanks for visiting my blog. I love reading yours!! And, of course, Tide fans are welcome. We just can't talk about the football game this fall. It has been sorely painful for me the last 2 years. Ouch! Hurts to think about it. But at least our coach is as cute as yours now - ;-) xoxo
You are tooo funnee!
and it's the perfect color!
Have a great Saturday!
I got it! Makes sence to me. Now where is a picture of the whole room. And are you going to use the map you got at the shop a year or so ago?????Let's see the room.
ummmm, if you have that many reasons for buying it then, it wasn't REALLy an impulse buy was it? It was a well thought through impulse buy which is so much better. On the other hand, my husband (and family AND friends) are constantly helping me (I say helping...they're really telling me) remember the differences between "wants" and "needs". For me, if I'm clothed, fed, and my bills are paid, all of my needs are met ;-)
ps. I would have bought it too.
sometimes for me, the best temptation medicine...is to not allow myself the chance to be tempted. yes, sometimes for me, that means that i gotta stay out of target.
believe me...no judging here honey.
OK, I will not sit in Judgment of Jennifer
Hey, was it the perfect colors? If so, then I say you were right to dive in an d buy it. lol Love the practice justification. I have to do that, too. If only we were independantly wealthy, huh?. Sounds like you got a great deal and just think of how long he will have this one and divide that into the total amount and you have more savings to share with your husband. :D. That's one of my secrets. shhhh... He does say, "stop saving me money", once in awhile but usually it works. GO ahead and use it if you like. Good luck!
Tammy
Bed-in-a-bag! The Garanimals of decorating! You couldn't pass that up!
PREPPY - Your madras drew me in! Love your thumbnail pic :) Cute coaches do make for good football... unless of course it's Shula - cuteness didn't help then.
NOE NOE - It really was LOL!
JERRI - The map will need screws and I couldn't bring myself to do that to our rental. It is rolled up in the closet but I WILL use it one day - it is just too awesome not to! I worked in his room cleaning out and organizing last night. I'm not quite finished but pics next week!
LIZ - Oh the shame! We get down to the truth of my indiscretion. It was a premeditated impulse buy. The inner Jen was SHOPPING for that bedding. Shhh, don't tell Bryan.
But it was the perfect colors.
TRACIE - I drove a little bit out of my way to purchase catfood the other day to stay out of _____. I have to avoid it too.
SARGE - I knew I could count on you.
TAMMY - EXCELLENT idea. I may have to try your logic :)
I love your thumbnail pic - you look so pretty!
KATHY - L! O! L! That is probably the best giggle that I am going to have all day! THANK YOU!!
Absolutely justified. Plus, by the time you bought the other pieces separately to match the comforter you already had, you'd have ended up spending more most likely!
And only $40??? I dare anyone to buy all those pieces for that amount and coordinated to boot!
Blessings!
Adorable blog you have! I love it! Impulse buying... hehehe... yep that's me! But you know I just HAD to have that flexible three ring recipe binder with attached pen and feather duster (to dust off the binder every 3 years I use it). Nice to meet you!
Thanks for the funny post!
With all that guilt, I have to ask...are you Catholic?
Sounds like a great call to me! I especially love your last reason - it should always be ok if it's for the kiddos ;)
My only impulse buys are books, or food if I'm in the grocery store and hungry.
I don't blame you. I do it alll the time for little man!!
I don't understand why buying something new for your son is a temptation. You wanted to re-do The Boy's room. You found the perfect set of coverings for the bed.
I don't see a need to justify that and I certainly don't see why you should feel guilty for doing it.
DAWN - I have done that more times than I wish to admit... I'll buy something on the cheap and then spend money to make it work. Not such a bargain then. And thanks for the ONLY 40 bucks - makes me feel justified :)
SPACEOFGRACE - Glad to see you! My husband says that I can 10 and 20 dollar our budget to death. I try to be good but I can't stay home ALL of the time.
MRS MOUTHY - No, not Catholic but I am a pleaser who has been raised by a Momma who speaks fluent guilt-ese. I hate to aggrivate my fella.
HEATHER - It IS for him and yet the decorating thing is all me. If he cared how it looked - and I mean REALLY cared - he wouldn't let it get so messy... er, maybe I, the Dust Bunny Hostage should back pedal on that statement :)
CHARLES - I bought 4 books today at a yardsale for 2 bucks. I am working on collecting some summer reading.
LISSA - Little Man deserves it!
TRAV - Since I am a stay at home mom relying on my husband to provide EVERYTHING, it makes me feel guilty. He recently said we needed to be careful and we do. So when I spend on non essentials, I stress a little.
But obviously not enough to "just say no" :)
Heck, you would have ended up spending all that just for sheets that would never have matched the other comforter as well. :P
She's making excuses...she wants validation..she needs this bed in a bag...then...she says "Don't judge me."
Huh?
You're a whacked out chickeepoo aren't you?
It's okay though...really!
Wow, I am trying to figure out if being called "whacked out" is nice. Even if you are being called chickiepoo in the same sentence?!
Sounds like you got yourself one good bargain! I'm about ready to re-do my son's room after two years of the same thing. Thanks for inspiring me to look! :-)
WAMBLINGS - There you go. Exactly! The new sheets aren't egyptian cotton or anything but they do match :D
JULIE - So you don't think Bryan is going to buy it? Darn!
TAMMY - LOL! Ya know? I've been whacked out for many years so I'm used to it. I think Julie loves me regardless :D I know I love her!
The Boy had the same room (although in two different houses??) for 3 - 4 years. It was time.
give him the informerical........... list items in bed in a bag ALL for $39.99; but if bought seperately this would cost you over $$$$$.
Then, while he's still counting on his toes, have a few other bed in a bag prices that are MUCH more to throw at him.
Finally, pout a little and promise to thank him properly later that night.
That usually works for me :)
Good luck
That's the kind of temptation I can't resist...perfect colors! :)
I love the TV announcer voice, btw. Hilarious!!
I like to divide the cost today over time - If you believe your son will use that bedding for say 4 years (for easy math), then you really are only spending $10 a year for your son's bedding. That's guilt free if you ask me. Heck, at $40 it's guilt free in my book. That's a FAB deal!
I totally understand all of those reasons. Yes- you are justified!! Does that make you feel better?
Don't be too hard on yourself. You are entitled to buy what you want to buy so long as you can afford it and you really need it. Sometimes we become guilty on things we should not be guilty of. We must enjoy life to the fullest and trust God that He will lead us to the right decisions if we are always attuned to Him. Thanks for the post. God bless you always.
It was the perfect colors...what else could you do?? Thanks for making me smile today.
