If you want to learn you should.... make a poster?

*I am linking this post to Life is Therapy. Marie blogs about teachable moments with her son Jack.

Texting conversation:

KIDDO "Hey mom i need blue icing. If u don't have time u can go buy some but i need it b4 6th and we r on a pep rally schedule."

ME "Oops! I forgot. I'll bring it to you soon."

KIDDO "Thank u!"

So I had to make this...

She needed the blue icing for a class project... an edible map. I personally don't see how you can learn much from an edible map. All I would be thinking is "Oh YUM, Denmark looks SO delicious. Hmmm, Italy looks a little thick... I think I'll nibble a bit off to make it look right. OOPS, now it looks like a sandal."

Good thing I was not directly involved in the edible map project.

*Random product review...

Since there was a lot of extra icing, I baked cupcakes.

Bryan and I had bought individual cupcake containers from Williams-Sonoma for our kids to use in their lunch boxes. They were impressive! Check it out...

The kids liked them too! Now back to the blog post about school projects...

The same kiddo also had to make a Sphinx. I think what she learned from this project is that if you make something really creepy, the student body will dig it.

Newspaper, duct tape, and a Halloween mask - how did the Egyptians do it without those materials? Boggles the mind.

I'm supportive of my kids but the whole project thing rattles my cage. They have had so many projects this year, requiring time and money.

Okay, okay. To be honest? My kiddo really enjoyed doing both of the above projects. And learning should be fun, right? She DID learn the material so kudos to her teachers for their creative teaching methods. I will quit whining and continue being supportive.

I'll be over here... on standby to purchase poster board.

*She is working on another project with her group right now... building a model of the Parthenon. Forty-eight columns (have mercy).

Momma is learning patience.

That project is AWESOME!

And my friend bought me a couple of those cupcake holders for my birthday. So fun!

Patience is indeed an art. I don't have much patience myself, so I admire folks that have lots of patience.

How fun that you are involved with these projects. That says a lot about your relationship with your daughter.

Have a terrific day. :)

Patience indeed. All these school project posts lately are terrifying me!!! What will they come up with by the time Jack is in those grades? Remember how we just used popsicle sticks and glue and thought it was a big deal?
LOL
Those cupcake holders are cool, btw!
Don't you just love your kitchen aid mixer? I got one as an early birthday present this year. Woohoo. Makes life so much easier. Well, baking anyway. :)
Thanks for linking up. It really is cool how much kids learn when they are having so much fun. And I am quite impressed with the sphinx.

You do know that extra icing can simply be eaten without putting it "ON" anything, don't you?

Nessa said...

Nice projects but I want a cupcake and the container to put it in just before I eat it.

The Sphinx rocks! LOL We bought those cupcake holders too, but more for me than the kids. You know, for those few times of the year when I go on field trips?

I laughed out loud (at work even, yeah, they know I'm crazy already) when I got to the pic of the cupcake turned upside down. This is only one of the MANY reasons I love you so! The Sphinx ROCKS!!! I hope there is a pic of the edible map... sounds interesting.

Oh... and I totally forgot....
Your Blue Icing... YUMMMMM!

WOw! That project is something! I agree, I would have wiped out several countries made of icing....

And those cupcake holders...adorable!

Thanks for the email. I will be responding soon. I am so behind. But I love you!

Congratulations! You made the Holiday Gifts to Give 2009 List at Tales from Bloggeritaville

Merry Christmas!

The Sphinxy Thingy does look creepy! I really do think hands-on does help them absorb the material.
Did you get a pic of the frosting map?

KRISTINA - The project was creepy as all get out!

SANDEE - Ha! I don't have much patience. I'm a groucher and a grumbler :)

MARIE - A few years ago when the girls were in elementary school, it seemed like I was the cupcake Momma. They just don't need things like that for school anymore.

BAMA BELLE - He is the sweetest thing EVAH saying his lines. His practice has made Christmas even sweeter.

IRASEMA - When I was in school, my mother would wind up DOING my projects. She would say she was helping and then she would take over. I TRY to HELP my girls.

Keyword... TRY.

CHARLES - It is awfully good on chocolate chip cookies too :)

NESSA - I really think the container made it taste better :)

CASII - I've never thought of cupcakes on a fieldtrip but that has possibilities LOL

JENN V - *wails* No picture!! And I have pictures of everything :(

That icing could be eaten right out of a cup :D

LEIGH - Thank you for the linkage. You are an awesome lady!! I followed a link last night to an Etsy shop and bought a necklace... can't remember if it was on your site or Kristina's. But it was easy shopping!

JEFF B - you know, that is a really nice thing to say.

BRENDA - they are obviously mind readers and wouldn't let me near it. No pictures :(

I always know I will get a chuckle when reading your posts! How funny. I had all sorts of mental images of you with the blue icing, Italy, Denmark....it boggles the mind.
Kuddo's to those teachers who "Teach" and challenge the kids.
Can't wait to see the Parthenon...lol.

HUGS...I think you need one!

Awesome project. It came out very impressive.

Edible map? I'm with you - I would want to eat it.

WOW, what a great project... you laugh about edible education, but honestly the lesson I remember most of highschool was when my partner and I made a Haitian Tap Tap bus out of cake, I think I still even remember parts of the oral presentation.

I hope that I have 1/2 the mother that you are. Thank you so much for your support and prayers this past year. You were the first person that I told, and I really appreciated having you there to virtually hold my hand! Merry Christmas!!!!!!

School projects should be called "family projects!" Whenever I am neck-deep in blue icing and poster board myself, I always think about the kids whose parents aren't involved. They (and their kids) miss out on so much!
PS... LOVE the cupcake holders!

On another blog, her child had to make a 3-D model of their house. We never had to do anything like this when we were in school. I was still reeling over having to make a 3-D house and you all had to make a sphinx? How clever to use a mask as the face!!

Love the cupcake carrier. too cool.

The Cupcake photo was interesting. This is an interesting project.

I wanna see a pic (and taste) of the edible map! That sounds fun...

And the cupcake holder? Genius.

Those cupcake holders are cool! I can't believe how everything is about cupcakes today! I remember all those school projects, it's nice when they are over. Don't like that the kids are grown but I never cared for the projects.

I love this post. Which child? I would have been in sad ship, if I had to do any of that when I was in school. Love ya

Wow, your kids are so lucky to have a talented mom on the scene to help with their funky school projects!

My son has an Egypt project due Tuesday and I'll be helping him with it this afternoon (wish we could build an edible pyramid, but no, it must be made from poster board).

PS - I'd love a cupcake holder in my Christmas stocking this year! What a cool idea!!
