and then I get my two cents worth (no Wordless Wednesday around here).
Sunday was Rowina's first Puppy Kindergarten class at PetSmart. We were looking forward to it because frankly, she needs a little training (and so do we).
She came to the backdoor Saturday afternoon and this is what we saw...
Rowina has become, for the most part, an outside dog. It is not extremely cold here in the South (now that the cold snap has... snapped) and she has a dog house with a snuggly bed. Saturday there was a light rain, so she had to stay inside of our home a bit more. When she went out to potty, she took a moment to dig in the dirt under our deck. I guess you can tell what color that dirt is by the pictures.
Diva Daughter and I gave her a bath to get her ready for school the next day. I was worried that the red would stain her fur and that I would have the dirty puppy in class (sort of like taking your kid to school the first day with a red Kool-aid stain around her mouth). Surprisingly, most of the stain came out of her fur and she smelled much better.
Sunday arrived and the family took her to class (ALL five of us). It did not go well. Based on her trip to the Vet and this class, we've come to realize that Rowina does not like people. She growled at anyone who came near her and was not social.
After listening to the instructions from the trainer, class members were told to take their puppy into the store to practice. We were given a "clicker" and encouraged to make the sound and use treats to train our dogs to "LOOK".
Let me remind you that I have an eight year old enthusiastic son. I have a possessive 12 year old daughter. And I have a bored non-animal loving 13 year old daughter (if we were training Rowina to play the sax she might be more interested).
We found an aisle to begin working with Rowina. It went like this: the youngest and the middle two had to argue about who goes first, how to hold the clicker, when to click the clicker, "YOU AREN'T DOING IT RIGHT", "MO-OM! TELL HIM TO STOP IT'S MY TURN!", "Oh my gosh y'all! Would you just give me that? She said to do it this way"... Pure. Chaos. I just stood there playing referee, and Bryan wound up walking out of the store.
No wonder Rowina doesn't like people.
If you are up for a little situational comedy, come and watch our next training class. Then again, we will have discussed appropriate behavior for the humans in the class before next Sunday, making this a learning experience for ALL who are involved.

That mud isn't reddish-ORANGE is it? I'd like to think of it as burnt Crimson, perhaps. :)
Does your store offer kid training? If so, I may send my two down there.
Good luck!
I just figured out why she's an outside dog. Bwahahahahahaha. How funny.
Have a terrific day and best regards to Rowina. :)
Huskies and malamutes are outdoor dogs. They just weren't made to be inside in the heat, not for long anyway. My Sampson could definitely teach her a thing or two about digging, good thing he's so far away!
One thing that will be handy come summer, get a hard plastic kiddie pool! She will have so much fun in it!
Hee Hee training class needed for the kiddies... I bet Rowina is giggling at you all on the inside!
LOL that is too funny. Children and animals are always a comedic mix! Good luck
Oh my gosh! She is so cute! What an irritable snuggly face!!!!
She is so beautiful. Love her markings. Skye did wonderful in her classes. (I didn't do clicker class) It's nice to have control.
Thanks for the chuckles! I don't care how "mis-behavin'" she may be... that doggie is adorable!!
And... you made me flashback to the red clay of Alabama!!
(sort of like taking your kid to school the first day with a red Kool-aid stain around her mouth).
Really I'd like to get through one of your posts without laughing so hard I want to wet my pants. LOL. I SO look forward to your posts. If you lived closer, I'd totally steal Rowina. Sorry, she's too cute. My dog's antisocial, too. He did the same thing to the vet @ PetSmart. ;)
She is sooo cute. I love those eyes!
<><
Puppy classes are fun. What a cute pup.
BTW - I'm heading back to Alabama to our friend's church. We are having our annual Pastor's meeting there. I'll be there Sunday. I'll remember our time together fondly.
Rowina is sure gorgeous! What a looker, I am a sucker for a cute face. She will train YOU soon , not the other way around
Oh dear! It is like a really bad dream, but real - and then you all need to get into the same car LOL Good luck my dear friend.
Those blue eyes get me everytime!
Jane
Ooooo! Red clay! Nasty stuff!
I really, really wish I could have been a fly on the wall at puppy training class!
first thought was 'disfunctional' perhaps 'unique' would be a prefered label - Family training classes here we come - and if they don't hit y'all with rolled up papers let me know and we'll all go too!!!
Pretty and funny all in one post..your gooood. ;)
I LOVE this animal! Oh to be a fly on the wall in puppy school. :-)
Oh my gosh...what a cute puppy. It will get better! I don't actually KNOW this...but it makes me feel better to say it:) Puppies are a lot of work. Ours is 8 months, and as soon as I figure him out, he does something new. Sounds a lot like my kids. And, oh yeah, my kids would have done the same thing in the store. Prayin for ya. Holly:)
Makes me think, "Oh what eyes you have!"
"The better to catch your heart with"
Might I suggest a video camera. You may be cringing at all the theatrics now, but I'll bet you all would get a kick out of watching it later.
I could just see it! So funny, wonder what went on in Rowina's mind? :)
Rowina be a bery kute wittle woofie doggie.
OK?
I'm surprised the trainers didn't tell you to choose just one person to be the primary involved in class. It's really not going to take well with so many people involved. It just confuses the dog.
Once she has been trained to the commands, she'll respond to those and not the voice. But early in training she should really only be exposed to one voice.
Good luck!
How funny. Who is training who? Sounds like the dog has the upper hand or paw. HA!
Lol I recognized that red dirt immediately. She is a little stinker. I read the rest of the post and quite frankly it sounds like my house. You read my blog...right? Chaos is a way of life for us.
Wait till she howls at the moon and your neighbors grab all the kids and run inside, thinking it is a wolf. That will be a blog for sure.
Hugs,
Rose
