Of Dunce Caps and Diplomas

Are you sick of hearing about the puppy? If you wanted to read about dogs all the time, you would read doggy blogs, right? You are here to read.... um... what are you here to read?

Never mind.

So a couple of weeks ago, I told you about our first Puppy Kindergarten class at PetSmart.

Pure. Chaos.

Well now I have PICTURES.

Rowina's class is filled with a pretty relaxed group of puppies

*This cotton ball on legs is Saban :)

*Prancer is not relaxed... but Prancer is so darn cute it doesn't matter.

The class had a test; the dogs had to maneuver an obstacle course.

See the obvious space between toys and treats? ROWINA.

The dogs were to start by sitting and then go into loose-leash walking beside the treats without taking any of them (the command was LEAVE IT). At the end of the line of treats and toys, they had to sit and then lay down. Then they were supposed to walk back down the line without eating any of the treats and sit again.

When it was our turn to do the obstacle course, Rowina wouldn't budge.

We had to physically place her at the beginning of the course, and sitting wasn't on her agenda. She ate a treat and I basically had to haul her down the obstacle course. No sitting, no laying, no LEAVE IT. She was the worst in the group. It was like she had been hanging out in the Mystery Van with Shaggy instead of being trained.

ROIKS!

I wish that I had a picture of my children's faces. They were so ashamed of Rowina's performance.

Our instructor asked everyone to go a second time and Rowina NAILED it. I mean stinkin' perfect! The kids were elated.

We moved on to the STAY command. STAY worked pretty well except for one minor glitch - The Boy wore Heely's to PetSmart. So the experience went like...

My Mommy says STAY! I can STAY.

See? I really can STAY. Give me the treat cause I am good at...oh look!

There goes my boy rolling by. I need to chase him. Okay okay, let me try again.

I can STAY... just look how good I STAY! Let me have the treat cause... oh, there's my boy again! He is zooming by me so I need to play with him... huh, what? You wanted me to STAY?

By the time we were on our way home I had developed a nervous tick...

... and these two rascals

...thought it was funny.

It wasn't.

Regardless of how I felt about the experience, I'm linking this post to the Life is Funny Blog Carnival.

Perfect pics, Jenn! You tell a great story, I could just see Rowina wanting to chase after your son. You could just see it in her eyes. Too funny!

Bwahahahahaha. It's going to take awhile to get rid of that twitch you know. Every time you think about this experience you'll have the twitch again. Bwahahahahaha. I can so relate.

Thanks for the laughs and have a terrific day. :)

I wonder what it is that makes your dog, of all dogs, the worst in the bunch? Could it be the Mom in the family? LOL Oh, of course not. The mom in the family is a complete saint. Just look at the second to last photo. Those are the eyes of an angel. :) or is that the nervous tick?

Hey, bring Rowina a little closer to the screen. A little closer...a little closer...good. Hey Rowina, SQUIRREL!

Dogs are pretty smart, and can learn and listen WHEN THEY WANT TO. And I just love that 'look' on your face, like "what just happened here".

I have to agree with the rascals...it is funny!

P.S. Your dog is so stinkin' cute that I want to squeeze her furry face.

Your post brought tears to my eyes it's so precious and funny and warm. Thank you for that!

We watch "The Dog Whisperer" occasionally. That man knows how to teach a dog to behave. Take a look sometime. I forgot what channel he's on. But with a creative family like yours, there should be no trouble finding it.

Jinkies!

(Sorry... couldn't resist! LOL)

Just look in those eyes... how could that face ever induce a twitch???

Think that's bad? We had an Irish Setter when I was growing up. Ever seen Red Dog? Yep... true, all true!

Your dog is adorable!!! At least there's some learning going on. My dog totally flunked puppy training class. The teacher also suggested not bringing her back. Good times.

Second time through is good...from worst to getting it is ok. And she's got the STAY thing down.

I'd say she's on her way to being a responsible citizen.

But...Rowina is so darn cute!

SO CUTE! That puppy is adorable. I think mine would fail Kindergarten. We won't try.

Best of luck to you with your new addition. Hope the diploma doesn't take 12 years to achieve. ;-)

This is so funny! And it brings to mind something that makes me go "hmmm....". Why is it that WE feel embarrrassed by our pets behavior? They're not human, yet we expect so much of them! You did a great job, even if you did leave with a nervous tick! I hope you heal soon! You're still beautiful ....

how could you not love those faces !

That puppy is smart, but on her terms clearly!

LOLOLROFLMAOLOLOLOLOL!!!

That photo of the "nervous tick" ... ?

PRICLESS!!!

ha ha ha ha ha ha ha

Very funny post.

And correctly noticed that the rolling boy was a distraction.

Well done on the second run of the course, puppy, however I found the treat eating run to be much funnier. And a LOT more understandable/normal.

Rowina sure is cute. Eat a treat for me, Rowina!!!

.... love the photos of the "relaxed" dogs, too.

They're nearly boneless, they are so relaxed. heh

I am so glad you are taking these classes. Skye did great in them.
She was excellent at leave it. I still practice this stuff with her all the time. I really helps. I did this because I was so afraid she would run out the front door, she is very good at Stay! That little prancer is a West Highland Terrier. I have raised 3 of them and our grand puppy Charlie is one.
Our Skye is the Cairn Terrier which is the original which the Westies came from. Your Rowina is such a beauty.
